"There's no doubt that this is a unique situation," stated Roscommon County Sheriff Detective Sergeant John Wybraniec.






The Roscommon County Sheriff's office received a call at 2:30 am on March 1 2015 that stated that there looked to be a window broken at the Gary Franz Auto Exchange.  The grandmother of a 9 year old and 10 year old boy had called to report that her two grandsons had damaged the window.  The police discovered when they investigated the property that car keys had also been stolen from the office and some of the cars had been driven.  Not only were the vehicles been driven in the lot but they had also been crashed into several other cars on the lot.

The police spoke to the family and the boys admitted that they had been the ones who broke in and damaged at least 6 cars.  The police then contacted the owner of the auto lot and left the boys in the custody of the grandparents.  They returned again in the early morning to continue their talks with the grandparents and the boys.

Only three hours later they were dispatched again to the grandparents home for a report of a child stuck underneath a car.  When they arrived, they found the 9 year old boy stuck under a car on the side yard.  The fire department was called to assist and they lifted the car off the boy with their hydraulic balloon.  He was taken to Grayling Mercy Hospital and later airlifted to Hurley Medical Center in Flint MI where he was treated for non life threatening injuries.

Evidently the boys had kept several sets of keys from their original break-in and had gone back to get cars again.  The nine year old had driving the 2009 Chevy Impala and the 10 year old was driving a 2012 Chevy Malibu.  The boys had been seen by several witnesses driving the vehicles they had stolen again from the lot near their grandparents.  One witness reported that one of the cars had gotten stuck in a snowbank on the side of the road and evidently, it was the 10 year old who had driven over his younger brother while trying to drive the car into the side yard.

Matthew Roche, the boys uncle stated that his parents had adopted both boys after their mother had given them up and they were trying to raise them as best as they could.  He added that both boys suffer from medical issues.  The 10 year old has a severe mental disability and the younger brother has learning disabilities and ADD.  The police have stated that they probably will not be charged with auto theft but may face joyriding charges.  They added that it is up to the courts what the punishment will be and DCS has been brought into the case as well.  The boys will probably face some sort of probation depending on their disabilities but no mention has been made as to who will be paying for the damaged cars.  If it were my parents........ I probably would be working every free moment for the next few years to pay off the damage done.
