A shining mustard moment

In just twelve minutes they disappeared.....129 hot dogs, 129 buns and the hopes of 17 other competitors. Once again we have crowned a champion at the annual hot dog eating contest at Coney Island NY. This year though, it is a new man who claimed the famous mustard yellow championship belt.

Joey Chestnut, 23, managed to inhale a total of 66 hot dogs with buns to not only take the title but smash his own world record of 59 1/2, set earlier this month. Takeru Kobayashi, champion the past six years running was dog for dog with Chestnut up to the 60 hot dogs each mark. With just 60 seconds left and the crowd in the audience screaming, both dug in for the last dogs. Kobayashi fell 3 hot dogs short of winning but his 63 beat his old record winning mark and personal best of 53 1/2.

It seems that all the "explaining" Kobayashi has done in the past week or so was more smoke and mirrors than actual physical disability. Despite the recent removal of a wisdom tooth and chiropractic treatment for his jaw, he chomped his way dog to dog with his closest competitor, Chestnut. Between the two men, they put away : 16 + packages of hot dogs and over ten packages of buns.......... all in twelve minutes. I haven't been to a family picnic where that many hot dogs were put away all afternoon, let alone in less than a quarter of an hour.

"If I needed to eat another one right now, I could," Chestnut said after receiving the coveted championship belt.

Eat another one? I don't think I could watch him eat another one.
