Not incompetent, just nuts

He was supposed to have gone on trial Thursday, September 6 2007 but a deal had ben struck for him to plead guilty to reduced charges on Friday, the 7th instead. Neither of those happened because Jerry Scholes, of Malvern Arkansas, called 911 and remains in the hospital.

Prosecutor Richard Garrett believes that what Scholes did was an attempt to show that he was incompetent to stand trial, not an effort to remove the ankle bracelet that monitored him on house arrest. Scholes's attorney asked the judge to postpone the trial after he injured himself. The judge agreed and revoked Scholes bond and ordered him jailed after he is released from the hospital.

It seems that Scholes made two tourniquets out of plastic zip ties and placed one on his leg and one on his arm. He then sawed through his right calf and into the bone before he called 911 and paramedics took him to the hospital. That was the leg that his ankle bracelet was on and it is reported that the police have moved it to his other leg.

Scholes was to have gone on trial on three counts of rape and one count of engaging children in explict video or print. The deal that was struck called for him to plead guilty to one charge of rape and the engaging charge, charges that had him facing up to 50 years in prison.

He couldn't have been that incompetent, he used a tourniquet and called 911 but it wasn't reported if he used a hand saw or went for a powertool. I agree that it is pretty obvious that he wasn't trying to get the bracelet off, unless he really was in need of glasses and just "missed" by a bit with the saw. Either way, he is still going to face a sentence it sounds as though he deserves........ he will have plenty of time to explain the "cool" scar now.
